Climate X Design

This is a collaborative project involving many groups, designers, and researchers. Here is a snippet from Foundation We Are's innaugural announcement for the project:

"From the 7th IPCC report, to the multi-annual letter of State Secretary for Culture Gunay Uslu - we hear many voices and institutions emphasise the urgency and their commitment to involve the creative sector in addressing complex societal challenges and transitions. Climate change is at the centre of many of these challenges and transitions. To us, the question now is not if, but how designers and architects can be involved meaningfully, effectively and sustainably.

In order to take action on the climate challenges we face, we see that the creative sector needs to collaborate more closely with climate researchers - those who are at the forefront of how we understand and interpret climate change. Collaborations for Future is not just about on what scientists and designers can work together, but how they can work together. How can we imagine, develop, test and support forms of collaboration that can enable this? How can we adapt commissioning models to make this possible now and in the future?

To find out, we've joined forces with NIOZ Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research, KNMI - Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute, PBL Planbureau voor de Leefomgeving, Social Design Showdown, Utrecht University, Eindhoven University of Technology and Pakhuis de Zwijger.

The laboratory
Starting in October 2023 until July 2024, we will create the possibility for 10 designers to collaborate with 10 climate scientists from our partner institutes and universities. The participating designers will be selected through an open call, which will be launched in July.

The research
We will study their creative processes and working methods in order to develop collaboration blueprints and commissioning tools that can enable scientific institutes to work more meaningfully with designers.

The public program
Throughout the project, we will host an interdisciplinary event series on climate change, inviting professionals from other disciplines to share how they make sense of climate change in their work. At the end of the project, the findings and individual outcomes will be presented at a symposium and an exhibition in October 2024.
